Week of Oct 25th

The best way you can support campaigns from now through November 2nd is canvassing. Campaigns in Northern Virginia have had a lot of canvassers for the past 4 weeks, so if you can, please plan to canvass outside of NoVA for GOTV!
We also have a final #DontTexasVirginia fundraiser for our flippable House races! This is a great way for democratic supporters outside VA to give these races the final push they need. Let’s go on the offensive! https://secure.actblue.com/donate/donttexasvirginia
Here are some important ways you can help beyond canvassing:
- Poll Observers still needed for full & half day shifts! More info and sign up here.
- Poll Greet in Arlington and hand out Democratic sample ballots during early voting and on election day. And in Fairfax! And for Josh Cole.
- Help cure ballots via phone. Sign up here. These calls will end at 12pm on Friday, November 5th.
- Reshare candidate Tweets. And GOTV posts. And #DontTexasVirginia (graphic here)
- Many more GOTV social organizing resources here.
Finally, post November 2nd, please plan for:
- Help cure ballots until November 5th! Sign up here
- Unpack Sessions – We love traditions at Network NOVA, and like we do every post-election we will be holding unpack sessions around the state. Let us know if you want to help organize. networkvirginia@gmail.com
- November 15th: deadline to submit legislative calls to action.

Alex Askew Canvass Extravaganza in Virginia Beach
Join Sharon Shutler, Luisa Boyarski, Eden Brown, and Rose Fabia canvassing in Virginia Beach to support Alex Askew – a young, innovative, principled delegate elected in 2019. Alex’s voting record is superb and personally – he’s delightful. The Republicans, who view VA Beach as ripe for retaking, are running heavy media ads against Alex. And, unlike NOVA, VA Beach does NOT have a canvassing tradition. Alex needs our help! Sharon Shutler will provide hotel options. And more importantly – as a native VA Beach local, Sharon will arrange for dining options and promises they will be good! For additional details and updates please sign up here: Askew Canvass Updates Questions: please contact Sharon Shutler at shutlersharon@gmail.com Sign up here
Attend really excellent Voter Protection Poll Observer or Hotline Training and Volunteer! Get started & sign up here. We need to make sure every Democratic vote is counted, and every voter has the opportunity to vote and have their vote be counted. Volunteers are still needed. Especially important with early voting, as voters who encounter issues then will still have time to request mail-in ballots or get to vote by Election Day. Hotline questions, contact Nancy Broff at If you have questions or concerns about doing it, please contact Nancy Broff or Amy Bergner (you can reply to this email & we will get back to you).

Welcome to the 2021 General Election to Keep Trumpism Out of Virginia! Early Voting has begun and will continue through October 31. Poll Greeters Needed – Arlington
Nov 2nd: 5:30am-7:00pm (2 hour shifts)
Arl Dems need our help to hand out Democratic sample ballots again – this time on Nov. 2nd. As you know, sample ballots are critical for local races because candidates are not listed by party affiliation. Poll greeters also help voters who have questions or need information and help from Democratic resources. We are short volunteers this year and would appreciate your help to fill the two-hour shifts between 5:30am and 7pm at each of Arlington’s 54 polling places. If you can take a shift – or two! – please sign up here

Paid Family Medical Leave – Social Media Posts and Postcards to Warner:
July Storybook – Tweet and Repost on Facebook
I wanted to make sure you saw our shiny new July Storybook! Our press release about the new storybook is on our website. This is our latest compilation of 20 stories from across our Commonwealth and the very real challenges everyday Virginians face in the absence of a statewide paid family medical leave program. We have a social media toolkit for allies available here. Please consider retweeting our tweet (here) and sharing our Facebook post (here).
Our previous three storybooks are linked here: April | May | June (a special edition featuring candidates running for office this year).
Postcards for Paid Leave – Contact Senator Warner
Earlier this week we launched a new “Postcards for Paid Leave” campaign. We’ve all seen the news about how instrumental our very own Senator Warner has been in negotiations around the American Rescue Plan and the American Jobs Plan. Next, it’s time for the American Families Plan. Just yesterday, we learned that Congress has nominally agreed to a $ number — now we wait for more details on how that number breaks down. While we wait, we hope you’ll join us as we send postcards to Senator Warner’s office! A few clicks and you’re done. Here is the online form. Questions, contact Kristina Hagen, kristina@familyfriendlyeconomyva.org
Cancel the Mountain Valley Pipeline and Gas Infrastructure Projects – Sunday, July 25th
Saturday, July 17th, dozens of activists marched through New York City’s Financial District from the Titanic Memorial Park to the Fearless Girl in front of the New York Stock Exchange and ended at the Charging Bull. Speakers included Delegate Sam Rasoul, Karenna Gore and Freeda Cathcart for the solidarity event calling for cancelation of all gas infrastructure projects. Check out the updated digital toolkit for photos, videos and tweets to use on social media. Help spread the word and about these calls to action from the event:
• Organizations support the Cancel MVP campaign by signing onto this letter that will be sent to the officers and the boards behind the Mountain Valley Pipeline. Check this link first to make sure your organization hasn’t already signed onto the letter. We are currently at 59 organizations representing over 1,700,000 members. Our goal is 75 organizations representing over 2 million members. The deadline is this Sunday July 25 to sign onto the letter.
• Encourage your members to sign the Cancel MVP petition and promote it on social media
• Spread the word to your family and friends in New York to oppose the National Grid rate hike and join the Gas Strike.

Public Screening of First Daughter and the Black Snake
Come see a public screening of the documentary film, First Daughter and the Black Snake, which follows the efforts of Winona LaDuke to fight the construction of a pipeline that crosses treaty lands in northern Minnesota. The film is all the more timely because the protests are intensifying this summer. The pipeline crosses the headwaters of the Mississippi in 6 places. Water protectors have already discovered a leak, and been thrown in jail for their efforts. The film screening is part of a week of environmental action to pressure the Biden administration to cancel the permits, much as he did for Keystone.

URGENT
Support Senator Favola’s plan to replace failing roof and HVAC systems in Title 1 schools with energy efficient systems. – By Sunday July 18th, 1:00pm.
Senator Favola is requesting the Governor to allocate “Elementary and Secondary School Relief” funding under the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) to upgrade failing roof and HVAC systems in Title 1 schools, those educating the poorest in our communities, AND to simultaneously make them energy efficient. This innovative proposal will be addressed in the August, 2021 legislative session which will allocate ARPA funding. It represents a one time opportunity to fix failing infrastructure in Title 1 schools, AND address the climate crisis. BUT it needs to get into the Governor’s budget. Please help!
Contact (1) Clark Mercer in Governor Northam’s office (clark.mercer@governor.virginia.gov) and
(2) Secretary of Commerce & Trade, Brian Ball (Brian.ball@governor.virginia.gov) and ask that:
- a $250 million budget appropriation be used to provide funding to the Virginia Department of Energy to create a grant program to retrofit or replace public Title 1 PK-12 school HVAC and or roofing systems;
- such projects increase energy efficiency and indoor air quality protecting the health of students and teachers;
- grant recipients include a measurement and verification plan to track energy efficiency savings and provide annual reports to DMME.

This workshop will help to provide insight and tools to engage in these crucial discussions and will allow us to further our progress of evolution as people. RSVP: Sign up for Zoom link

We started with Holly at a game-changing event, the annual Women’s Summit, Flip Virginia Blue, 2017. Holly was the MC at the first Summit, and led the group from electioneering to legislation after our big 2017 win. Holly has been at the forefront for lobbying efforts to ratify the ERA and is a staunch supporter of women’s rights and women’s health initiatives. Our BADASS evening of arts, education, and fun will feature special guests including:
- Dorri C. Scott, CEO, Wise WOMAN and Founder Facilitator: “Let’s Talk Race and Timely Conversations.” Resident Poet Women’s Summit will read and share words to inspire-“resistance and reclamation.
- Feminist & Educator, Jessica Berg, Women’s Summit Equality Speaker: “The Renaissance Requires Education in the Fight for Equality.”
- Poet & Creative Arts Educator, Artist Tammarrah Addison, Women’s Summit Spoken Word Performer: “Unbossed and Unapologetic – Running to Win”
- Women’s Summit 8 Organizers, who have been a tour de force in the last 4 years.

Fair Fight Action Phonebanks
We have a new opportunity to talk to Georgia voters to ensure their voices are heard and help us document their experiences to use in our fight for free and fair elections. Can we count on you to step up again for Georgia voters and help us phonebank these voters we can’t contact by text? We will do a brief training at the start to make sure you have all the information you need and feel ready to get on the phone and we will stick around through the entire phonebank to answer any questions. For those of you who phonebanked with us during the runoff, we will be using a Virtual Phone Bank (VPB) for these calls rather than Hubdialer. To participate in these phonebanks you will need a phone AND a device of some sort (this can be a laptop, tablet, desktop computer, iPad, etc).

Important Correction for ROV Postcard Writers
CORRECTION NEEDED – LAST DAY TO REGISTER TO VOTE IS MAY 17 Mistakes happen. There was a mistake in the instructions from ROV for the voter registration campaign. The last day to register to vote in Virginia for the June primary is May 17, NOT May 18. Please make this correction on your postcards. If you have already mailed your postcards, there is no need to panic and send a second card. If voter registration material arrives on May 18, the person will be registered for the general election in November, just not the June primary.
CALLS TO ACTION
April 11th – April 24th (postcards must be mailed by the 24th)
Help ROV reach 350,000 Voters of Color
We’ve just been contacted by Reclaim Our Vote (ROV) to help them finish up outreach to unregistered voters of color in Virginia. They are asking WofA to write postcards to voters in Fairfax county and a few other small counties to help them cross the finish line in sending out 350,000 postcards to voters of color.
PLEASE MAKE YOUR REQUEST NO LATER THAN APRIL 12 as postcards must be mailed out no later than April 24! Request postcards here: https://forms.gle/QZa7tLUr8WFHqeZo8
Take Action to Get Big Money out of Politics.
Are you frustrated that so much money is being spent on our elections and that corporations and special interest have a large role in influencing our public policies? Not only has election spending exploded on the national scene but also in Virginia, which is one of only 5 states with no limitations on campaign donations. Join our “MoneyOutVA” group, a non-partisan group working to get big money out of politics, to review national and state spending on elections, examine how campaign finance bills fared in our Virginia General Assembly this year, and explore how you can make a difference in getting big money out of our elections.
