SUMMARY:IGUALADA: Refusing to Know Your Place
DESCRIPTION:Igualada tells the remarkable story of Black Colombian activist Francia Márquez and her journey from rural Colombia to the national political stage\, where she launched a historic campaign that challenged the country’s political establishment. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBut Igualada is more than one woman’s political rise. The film also tells the story of the grassroots movement surrounding her campaign—a movement led by young people\, women\, LGBTQ+ communities\, and Afro-Colombians who demanded a different kind of politics and a more inclusive vision of democracy. \nThrough Márquez’s story\, the film raises questions that resonate far beyond Colombia: Who gets to have political power? Whose voices are heard? And what happens when people who have historically been told to “know their place” refuse to do so? \nThe screening will be followed by a brief community conversation about race\, identity\, political power\, representation\, and the connections between the Black and Latino experience throughout the Americas. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAs always\, A.C.T.O.R. is free and open to the public.

SUMMARY:Protest Trump's Arch with Rep. Don Beyer
DESCRIPTION:As we’ve witnessed countless times\, the Trump administration regularly attempts to circumvent the rules and laws that have governed this country for 250 years. Now\, as a self-indulgent project\, Donald Trump plans to build a 250-foot arch without Congressional approval\, a clear violation of federal law. \nBut Trump’s planned construction of his “Triumphal Arch” is not only illegal. It is an affront to American veterans and their families. \nThe arch will sit on Memorial Circle along the Potomac River\, impeding the symbolic line-of-sight between the Lincoln Memorial in D.C. and Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia\, where hundreds of thousands of our nation’s military members have been laid to rest. \nThat’s why Public Citizen is holding the line against the construction of the arch to tell Trump and his administration to “Respect our Vets!” \nJoin Public Citizen\, Third Act DMV and other partners on October 1 from 8:30 am to 9:30 am ET at Memorial Circle as we demand the Trump administration withdraw its plans to build the arch and instead focus on the real issues that affect our active military members\, veterans and all Americans.

SUMMARY:Turn ‘I Don’t Vote’ into the Start (Not the End) of a Conversation
DESCRIPTION:You’ve heard it at the door or on the phone: “Oh\, I don’t vote.” Conversation over\, right? \nNot so fast. \nMore than one in three eligible voters skipped the 2024 elections—and here’s the surprising thing: many actually agree with Democratic priorities. If even a small fraction vote in this year’s midterms\, they can move our country in a more hopeful direction. \nIn this interactive 75-minute workshop\, Elizabeth Chur\, author of The Joy of Talking Politics with Strangers\, demonstrates how to use curiosity and empathy to engage with “high-potential” voters — those who rarely or never vote. These fellow Americans are often just waiting for someone to listen without judgment. \nWhether you’re a seasoned canvasser or phone banker or a brand-new volunteer\, this workshop will give you strategies for transforming “I don’t vote” into “I’ll vote\, and bring my whole family to the polls\, too!”

SUMMARY:March for a Moratorium: Fight Against Data Centers!
DESCRIPTION:Join us for our Alexandria stop on Virginia’s March for a Moratorium — one of the stops of a broader two-week series of events across the Commonwealth calling for a statewide pause on new data center development. \nData centers’ rapid\, unchecked buildout is out of control and creating serious harms in our region. We’ll gather with local residents\, community organizations\, advocates\, and elected leaders to demand that Virginia slow down and figure out how to protect our communities before approving any more data centers. \nThis rally and brief march will take place just outside of Plaza 500\, the site of an approved (but not yet built) data center campus that the Bren Mar community has been fighting for four years. From its proximity to residences and metro\, to cross-jurisdictional impacts\, to its environmental harms\, to lack of transparency\, the Plaza 500 data center is a poster child for why we need more statewide protections in place. \nCome march with us\, hear from local speakers\, and help send a message to Richmond loud and clear: it’s time for a moratorium. \nThe event location is about a 25-minute walk from the Van Dorn metro station (Blue Line). Public transit and carpools are encouraged! Bringing your own signs is also encouraged\, although we will have some extras available. \nBilingual / bilingüe: servicio de interpretación al español disponible. \nTo see other events in the March for a Moratorium\, click here.

SUMMARY:Justice for All from Arlington to Palestine
DESCRIPTION:Join Arlington for Palestine and We of Action Virginia for a movie night and community discussion about Palestine. Co-sponsored by Jewish Voice for Peace. \n\n\n\n\nWe are having this teach-in about Palestine to learn about how what’s happening abroad connects to our political fights here at home. We will also be sharing about efforts to cut ties between Arlington and the corporations providing entities like ICE and governments like Israel the tools needed to harm our communities. RSVP here: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/justice-for-all-from-arlington-to-palestine-tickets-1999205918720 \nDoors open at 6:15pm and the teach in will start at 6:30pm. A light dinner will be served. \n  \nWe’d like to explain why we see this teach-in as connected to WofA’s mission rather than apart from it. As an Indivisible-aligned group\, we stand with Indivisible National’s statement on Gaza. That statement frames this issue in terms we hold at the core of our work: U.S. complicity and the use of American taxpayer dollars\, accountability under domestic and international law\, and the danger of an authoritarian administration. It also called for an immediate ceasefire\, the release of all hostages\, and humanitarian aid\, and it condemned the October 7 attacks as well as the rise in both antisemitism and Islamophobia here at home.  \n\nOur immigrant neighbors include Palestinian\, Arab\, and Muslim families\, and in the past year we have seen students and residents targeted by immigration enforcement for their speech on this issue. For many in our community\, this is not a distant question. In fact\, Arab Americans are a growing and politically active constituency in Virginia\, with more than 200\,000 residents and significant concentrations in Northern Virginia and Fairfax County. Many did not vote in 2024 because they felt Democrats were not addressing their concerns. Younger Arlington voters have also asked why WofA has not addressed Palestine. This event is an opportunity to listen\, give voice to people who feel unheard\, and build understanding.  \n

DESCRIPTION:Bring your energy (and your leashed pup!) for a group move from James Hunter Dog Park to Courthouse Plaza on Saturday\, October 17! Whether you run\, walk\, dance\, skip\, or stroll\, we’ll move together and arrive ready to vote early. Check-in at the start\, music along the way\, and water\, fruit\, granola bars\, and stickers waiting at the finish. We decide what comes next. \nFor more than a year\, millions of people have come together to reject the idea that power belongs to kings\, billionaires\, or politicians who believe they are above the people and the law. \nNow\, we are taking the next step\, turning people power into voter power. Unlike previous No Kings actions\, No Kings: Vote Early\, is not purely a protest. Instead\, on October 17th\, it’s a day of nonpartisan voter participation: we are bringing our community together to make a plan to vote early and ensuring every eligible voter understands their options for how to vote and has the opportunity to make their voice heard. \nBecause no one person gets to decide our leaders before voters do. On October 17th\, join us in local events across the country as we get out the early vote and say it loud: no thrones\, no crowns\, no kings. \nNo Kings: Vote Early events are nonpartisan and are designed to increase participation from all eligible voters.
