A Month of Marches and Actions!

Welcome to the WofA newsletter!

April was a busy month for WofA and the resistance!  We rallied with Congressman Don Beyer at the Science March, fought for the environment at the Climate March, held Voter Registration drives, and attended a Town Hall.  We also hit our 1100th member.

We have even more planned for May, and can’t wait to get started. Keep reading for project updates and event highlights!! Also tell us more about you, and how you’d like to make our state better in 2017, by filling out our new member/interest form.

MEMBERSHIP MEETINGS
We had a fantastic April member meeting with Assemblyman Rip Sullivan. Come to our next general meeting on June 5 at the Shirlington Library, located at 4200 Campbell Ave, Arlington, Virginia 22206. Refreshments will be provided.  We are happy to help people find a ride to Shirlington.

The Healthcare Vote: Where we go from here

History doesn’t reward political victories, it rewards improvements in the human condition. -Dan Rather

Last week the House voted to repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act.  The new bill that Republicans rammed through could strip more han 20 million people of healthcare and jeopardize coverage for people with pre-existing conditions. We will hold accountable the legislators who supported this bill, and reward the ones who opposed it.  We will place pressure on our senators to block passage of the bill in the Senate. Republicans are already seeing the consequences of their actions, with the nonpartisan Cook Report moving twenty Congressional districts towards the democrats.  So keep doing the weekly blast folks, and if you want to learn more about what comes next (spoiler alert: its a complicated process called reconciliation), read this explanation from Politico.
Need some inspiration for doing the weekly blast!  Watch this WofA contact her reps in the time it takes to get an Uber.

Do you have family or friends who want to become more politically involved, but don’t have a lot of free time?  Do you have family or friends who are members of a community with historically low voter turnout? We are recruiting volunteers who are involved in and can reach out to diverse communities throughout Virginia. Our Liaison program will increase voter turnout in communities with historically low participation. Community Liaisons will receive key information to share with others about voting in Virginia’s elections in 2017. To learn more, visit our role description here.

Gerrymandering and Swing Districts Subgroups

The Gerrymandering and Swing Districts subgroups are currently working together for a more progressive Virginia.

  • Swing Districts is assigning “Adopt-a-District” volunteers to research nearby election districts and link volunteers with opportunities.  Members are also developing a “Scorecard of Key Bills” approved in the 2017 General Assembly session (including the 40 bills vetoed by the Governor), which can then be used as a reference for groups within those districts researching voting histories for state representatives in swing districts.  Finally, the group is developing a “Community Liaison Program” which is recruiting volunteers in diverse communities throughout Virginia to help Get Out the Vote for Virginia’s 2017 elections.  In addition to these ongoing projects, the Subgroup has already produced a “Vote in 2017” flyer which summarizes why it is important to vote in the Virginia elections during 2017.
  • The Gerrymandering subgroup is working with Swing Districts to change the state legislature in order to improve the likelihood that the General Assembly will adopt redistricting reform.  It is actively recruiting volunteers to educate voters during a two-hour shift on Primary Day, June 13.
  • Looking ahead, volunteer opportunities may also include coordinating with WofA’s governor’s race initiatives and serving as coordinator for WofA’s fall Get Out The Vote efforts.

Youth Outreach Working Group

The Mission of the WOFA youth outreach group is to educate young people about civics, or as we call it “sexy civics”, and to be a resource for young activists looking to better their communities. They recently hosted a high school forum to learn more about the needs of high school students. Their next step is to reach out to high school political groups.

Next Meeting: TBD

 ISSUES GROUPS

Environmental Issues Subgroup

The Environmental Issues Task Force is focused on key issues in Virginia including funding for the Chesapeake Bay Program, safe disposal of toxic coal ash, monitoring fracking and natural gas pipelines, and working with coalitions to promote clean energy.  Recently, the task force marshaled WofAs to (1) call their state reps to close a loophole that would have enabled Dominion Power to shut down coal ash impoundments with no commitment to health and the environment, (2) oppose rollbacks of EPA regulations, (3) support the EPA Chesapeake Bay Program, and (4) enthusiastically participate in the Climate March.  We would love more volunteers!

Next Meeting: TBD

For additional information email: shutlersharon@gmail.com

Gun Violence Prevention Subgroup

The Gun Violence Prevention Task Force focuses on issues related to gun violence. They recently lobbied Mark Warner at his office and encouraged him to oppose Sen. John Cornyn’s (R-TX) concealed carry reciprocity legislation (S. 446), which would force Virginia to recognize concealed carry standards from every other state – even though requirements for getting a concealed carry permit vary drastically across states and may be lower than Virginia’s.

They recently hosted a high school forum to learn more about the needs of high school students. Their next step is to reach out to high school political groups.

COME TO THIS TRAINING on Tough Questions! Sometimes in conversations we don’t know how to address certain questions, and it keeps us from having the conversations we should be having. Answering tough questions is about giving you the tools to engage with your family, friends, and community—we don’t give you talking points (because we’re covering all the issues!) or all the answers, but we train you in skills that will be helpful.
