IGUALADA: Refusing to Know Your Place

Igualada tells the remarkable story of Black Colombian activist Francia Márquez and her journey from rural Colombia to the national political stage, where she launched a historic campaign that challenged the country’s political establishment.

But Igualada is more than one woman’s political rise. The film also tells the story of the grassroots movement surrounding her campaign—a movement led by young people, women, LGBTQ+ communities, and Afro-Colombians who demanded a different kind of politics and a more inclusive vision of democracy.

Through Márquez’s story, the film raises questions that resonate far beyond Colombia: Who gets to have political power? Whose voices are heard? And what happens when people who have historically been told to “know their place” refuse to do so?

The screening will be followed by a brief community conversation about race, identity, political power, representation, and the connections between the Black and Latino experience throughout the Americas.

As always, A.C.T.O.R. is free and open to the public.
